Jill was becoming more concerned after her E320 rolled over 400kmi, and was lobbying hard for something newer, or at least with a lot less miles on it. We've had such good luck with the first one and liked it well enough that procuring another one with less miles on it looked viable. The search, however, was going poorly as W210 cars are a lot less common now than they were not all that long ago. (The W210 is the last car they made that can be considered reasonably DIY-friendly, which is a big deal for me.) The selection criteria:

  1. AWD
  2. Seat heater, functioning
  3. Cosmetically acceptable
  4. Substantially less miles on it than the existing car
  5. No older than the existing car
  6. Not white (Jill), or black (me)
I finally found an acceptable-looking one 9 hours away. After some phone negotiation, and with the understanding that there could be deal breakers when seen in person, I hooked up the car trailer to the V10 truck (Jill was away, so no second driver) and headed out, cash in hand.

First thoughts upon seeing the car:

  1. The car looks good, presents well.
  2. It has orthopedic seats and a rear sunshade, neither of which I am familiar with.
  3. Conventional radio, not the COMAND system. Asking for CODE. Has a CD changer in the trunk, but these rarely work by now.
  4. The headlight dent is substantial, but should be fairly easy to mitigate.
  5. Needs a driver's door check strap.
  6. There is some transmission oil wicking into the TCM.
  7. Drove well enough, but went into a limp-home mode of some sort with incredibly laggy and feeble acceleration. Their scanner claimed TPS failure.
  8. The SRS light is on.
  9. Lamp is out behind the clock/shift indicator.
  10. The cupholder mechanism is missing.
  11. The title is missing, I have to wait for the paperwork to go through before I can license it.
They had claimed that "Everything works as it should". Yeah, see above. I knocked them down a few hundred for the issues, and we loaded it onto the trailer. Yes, I believe I overpaid, but:
  1. I was tired of looking, it had been months;
  2. I haven't seen a better-looking one;
  3. Jill is not infinitely patient. Far from it, in fact. She would probably have just gone out and bought something and I doubt I'd have been happy with it.

Because I was also going to the beach to deliver some (big) tools to the cabin and mow the lawn, fuel costs for acquisition were higher than strictly necessary: $371. (Only by the laden differential of a round trip from Portland to Long Beach, whatever that is. Let's call it 230 miles, or about $35.)
